The last Wednesday in May is Senior Health & Fitness Day. Approximately 100,000 senior adults will participate in activities across 1,000 locations in the United States to participate in National Senior Health & Fitness Day.
Here are some ideas of what to do on National Senior Health & Fitness Day:
- Swimming & Water Aerobics
- Bike Riding
- Tai Chi
Walking is great for improving your circulation, enhancing your mood, lowering your risk for Alzheimer’s disease and ensuring a longer, healthier life – read more about the benefits in our blog Walking – Incredible Health Benefits!
Water is terrific for joint conscious exercise, reducing the impact that running or walking might cause, which is important to a lot of our seniors. Many senior centers and membership gyms offer water aerobic classes weekly!
Yoga can offer some wonderful benefits when practiced regularly such as increased flexibility, improved circulation, and a better range of motion and strength, which makes everyday tasks easier.
4. Bike Riding
Biking is a great sport for seniors. It can be a vigorous cardio workout along the hills or a pleasant ride through the park with family. Many seniors also like to bike around town for errands instead of taking the car. There are many bicycle options – make sure you pick a bike that is comfortable and meets your biking goals.
5. Tai Chi
Tai Chi is often referred to as “meditation in motion” focusing on slow but deliberately strong movements which have proven helpful for reducing blood pressure, increasing circulation, and establishing a more peaceful state of mind.
